Nexus One, What does this mean?
I thought I would follow up to an article that I wrote a
week ago amount the current smartphones and how they match up towards each
other. (I don’t know if it has been posted yet). The question really is whether the new Google
Nexus One phone really affects the mobile phone landscape?
The phone was just released on the 5th and has
the following specifications: Support for GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz),
Wi-Fi 802.11b, g and n, UMTS Band 1/4/8 (2100/AWS/900) - HSDPA/HSUPA, and Bluetooth
2.1. So what is missing here? Support for AT&T’s UMTS network, what this
means is that you are limited to the 3G services from T-Mobile only in the U.S.
Anytime that you have 3G coverage through a different provider which does not
use these UMTS bands you are out of luck. It also means that if you wanted to
activate the phone on the AT&T network it is possible but without support
for 3G. The price point on T-Mobile
(with a 2 year contract) is $179.00 and a unlocked price of $529.00 which is a
little pricey compared to the iPhone competition.
I must say as a long
time techie and tinkerer I love the idea
of being able to easily install open applications to my phone and be able to
let the markets determine the types of applications available instead of Apple.
Don’t get me wrong I love my iPhone but I have to jump through hoops to get
applications on it which are not approved by Apple (And technically void my
warranty). I tend to agree that the tethering of the Google phone to T-Mobile
will probably not be a good selection when there are other much larger carriers
available. However, T-Mobile does seem to have a better Customer Service
reputation and that is good selling point.
Google is also advertising that a CDMA version of the Nexus
One will be available in 2010 which will support the Verizon network. This will
probably be the point when the true weight of the Nexus One is able to be
utilized.
What are your thoughts, will the launch of the Google, Nexus
One affect the Mobile phone landscape or will it just be a drop in the iPhone
bucket? How will it fare against the other Android phones?
