Introduction and Internet filtering.

Well first I must introduce myself as this is the first of (hopefully)
many blogs posts on here. My name is Sean Wilkins and I am a networking
consulting/engineer/author. I have been in the business for about 15 years and
have been around the U.S. several times over for a variety of different
companies. My specific levels of experience are rather wide but have been concentrated
in the networking arena for a while with allot of experience with Cisco and
Lucent implementations. I live in NC and typically work from home for the majority
of my recent projects and have a little one year old with another one coming in
July. So enough of this and on to my commentary.
The main subject here revolved around my recent articles on
the decision of Australia to introduce a bill which would mandate a filter be
placed on all incoming and outgoing Internet traffic. What makes this a story is
that fact that Australia is not a country like Iran or China which greatly
limit their countries individuals to free content. Having my own kids who on
one day soon be using the web and surfing around for their school projects I do
have a specific stake in this debate. While, I don’t live in Australia it is
more intended to be preemptive to the people in this country who look at this
type of action and say “that seems like a good idea”.
While I do wish to limit the content that my kids will be
able to see on the Internet in their early years it is also my duty to stand up
for the free rights that exist in this country and one of the things that this
country was founded on. I believe that the idea of a countrywide filter on
traffic is a terrible idea as it takes this responsibility for screening
content and gives it completely to a third party who may or may not have the
same priorities. These types of decisions should be left in the hands of the
parents. There exist many different methods for limiting the type of content
which is allowed on the computers of children and even if the parents are not technically
savvy can be easily implemented.
These ideas should also be a problem to the people who run
many of these content related sites as these filtering technologies can accidentally
block their valid content. Even if these companies are not putting out content
which relates to the main hot subject areas they can still be blocked, this
type of issue I highlighted in my Internet Filtering methods article.
So as this is Christmas Eve, I wish everyone a Happy
Holidays.
