IT Hiring Appears to be Bucking Recession Fears

Despite increasing signs of doom and gloom on the economic front, there’s yet another report that hiring in the IT sector is expected to continue to be healthy through the remainder of 2008.
According to the CareerBuilder.com Midyear Employment Forecast, which was conducted from May 22 through June 13, as much as 35% of IT employers are planning to increase their full-time employees through the remainder of the year. That was the highest hiring rate among all industries surveyed.
"Attracting and retaining skilled workers in the IT industry continues to be a challenge, as 45 % of IT employers cite that they have open positions for which they cannot find qualified talent," Eric Presley, chief technology officer of CareerBuilder.com said in releasing the survey.
"The pervasiveness and reliance upon technology continues to escalate and the amount of graduates in IT is trailing behind the demand for their knowledge and expertise."
That appears to be good news for IT workers. Nearly one-quarter (24%) of IT hiring managers say the average increase in salary will be 5% or more in the second half of 2008 compared to the first half of the year.
The rosy employment forecast comes during a week when the economy seems to be sputtering on a number of fronts. But it is backed by several other recent surveys. See this post on IT spending and this post on the IT skill shortage.
I'm not saying the forecasts are wrong, but I'd bet most of those hiring managers who were predicting increases back in May are double-checking their requirements to see if, in fact, those hires and pay increases are necessary or can be postponed.
