At CIOZone we've reported a lot in recent months on developments in the mobile space. As companies like Apple and RIM launch newer and more advanced versions of their smartphone devices, IT executives are finding these devices are becoming their primary link to email and the Web in general.

I've talked to several people recently who have said they have begun to leave their laptops at home on business trips in favor of relying solely on their BlackBerry, iPhone, or other smartphone device.

The world has gone mobile and so has CIOZone.

This month we launched a new mobile version of CIOZone.com. Now our members have access to all of our breaking news, features, research, blogs and other services from the convenience of their mobile devices.

We're proud of the launch for several reasons. First of all it's something we knew we had to do. As a site that provides a professional social network for CIOs and senior IT executives, it is vital that we allow our members to access our features whenever, and wherever possible.

But the mobile product is also a showcase for the technology expertise here on staff at CIOZone. The CIOZone platform is built on open source technology. We've been pleased with the platform and have continued to push its limits along with input from the open source community. But relying on open source can also sometimes mean having limited options, or needing to wait on software releases.

In preparing for the launch of our mobile product, CIOZone tested several open source options. We did find one that met most of our requirements, but it also would have meant duplicating the site. In the end, our technology team, led by James Lee, decided to undertake a custom development of the mobile product. Discussions around the scope of the project began in February, and a soft launch took place on March 23. It is now ready for primetime.

The technology behind the mobile version of CIOZone.com automatically detects when a person is visiting the site using a mobile browser and delivers a Web page suited for viewing on a BlackBerry, iPhone, or any other mobile device. Alternatively, CIOZone can also be accessed using the mobile address m.ciozone.com.

James Lee would be happy to answer any questions about the mobile product. And tell us what you think - we're always looking for ways to make CIOZone more useful to our members.

We are very happy with James Lee's efforts to provide this audience with a functional mobile product. We will be working with our Experts Group and our Advisory Board to add even more features and functionality to this product. CIOZone would be interested in hearing more from you, the audience and our registered members, about what functionality you would want in this product beyond this initial step. Any thoughts you might have toward developing this platform would be welcomed and appreciated.
