Gartner earlier this week came out with some words of wisdom for CIO working on IT budgets for next year – plan on doing a lot of re-budgeting.

Given today’s economic uncertainty, the research company advised IT decision makers to put together a number of contingency plans for next year that could be pulled out and used as events unfold. It recommended that CIOs use “current management guidance for 2009 as a base,” and then put together plans based on these three scenarios:

-- If 2009 IT spending doesn’t exceed 2008 annualized IT spending levels.

-- If 2009 IT spending comes in at 80% of 2008 annualized IT spending levels.

-- If 2009 IT spending is 105% of 2008 annualized IT spending levels.

It said CIOs should expect to do a lot of business replanning between now and the end of the year as companies deal with the "aftershocks" hitting the global economic system.

“Clear other workloads and prepare your managers for a long haul involving many budget rewrites, possibly extending into 2009,” said Gartner.
