Does A Chief Exec Need To Use A Computer?
Lee Gomes of The Wall Street Journal asks an interesting question in his column: “Should a president -- of the United States, or even of a company, for that matter -- use a computer?”
First thought: Just a quick easy hit against John McCain, who’s been an easy target for his computer illiteracy. After all, the world is moving fast and there’s tons of information to digest. The conventional wisdom is that in this day and age, an executive must be connected to quickly assemble information and make decisions. And they must have some experience with computer technology to fully appreciate – and see new ways to tap -- the power of computer technology.
But then Gomes goes on:
“But what about the opposite question: Does anyone who spends all day in front of a PC, forging a river of data posing as information, have any time to think?”
His conclusion:
“For a president, a computer can be a … distraction. Sure, he could spend five minutes reading an especially insightful bog post from one of his core constituencies. But it would be better for him to be spending the time having coffee with the person thinking the thoughts that the world will be blogging about a week or a month hence.”
Interesting thoughts.
Next question: What do you think?
