Every technology innovation changes the way we do things.
Cloud computing is creating inflection point with the way business applications
or solutions are delivered. With the obvious advantages offered by cloud
computing, are we headed towards a situation where business takes control of
their own destiny in deploying their own applications?
Cloud computing offers a low cost point of entry for developing
and deploying applications. There is no capital expenditure involved (typically
for technology investments, it is owned by IT) in renting the computing/storage
and infrastructure capacity in the cloud.
With pay as you go and as you use, initial cost is very low for trying
out concepts/dabbling in developing solutions.
Given the cost, capacity elasticity advantages offered by
the cloud computing (and as days pass by, more and more vendors are offering
their software components as PaaS, increasing technological components which
are available as PaaS), a question comes to my mind, what prevents business
from hiring technological expertise and deploy solutions they yearned for (and
which IT was not able to deliver for multitude of reasons – budget, capacity
etc…)? This will potentially create a win/win situation for business (at least
in the business users mind), they do not have to depend on IT for delivering
solutions, business users now can control their own destiny in much cost
effective way.
While this thinking and approach may not work in every
situation and in a long run it might create a lot of silos and will not be good
for the enterprise, cloud computing is here and its offering options. Reality
of the situation is that cloud computing is changing the way solution delivery
can be accomplished.
I would love to hear from the readers about their thoughts
and experience about
1. Is cloud computing disruptive for IT
Organizations way of doing business? In what ways? (Both positive and
negative)?
2. If your are CIO or in IT: How are you planning
to prevent (or cope up with) several applications/solutions silos being
developed and deployed in the cloud (not necessarily always by IT)?
3. Is your organization/business embracing cloud
computing? Who is leading the charge (business or IT?) in embracing cloud
computing?
4. Are there policies/procedures around when and
how to make use of cloud computing in your organization?
