As of April 2009, Linux passed the 1% mark for the first time, and the Mac continues to hover just shy of 10%.
MS Windows year over usage has fallen by nearly 2% but still reatains a commanding lead on the client side desktop.
Much of the Linux growth is due to the most recent trend - the proliferation of relatively inexpensive ( $250 - $500 ) operational netbooks running Ubuntu Linux or some other popular Linux variant.
Will this trend continue, will it accelerate? One thing is clear, end users are giving up their hard wired ethernet connections in favor of smaller, more portable devices with built in Wi-Fi based broadband access to the internet. They also continue to embrace SaaS based, ASP based internet applications to conduct their business.
