Google isn’t exactly looking over its shoulder at Microsoft just yet, but a study conducted by research firm comScore says Bing is off to a solid start.

According to comScore, the new search engine from Microsoft, dubbed Bing, increased its share of the market during the week of June 2 to June 6 to 11.1% from 9.1% a week earlier. Bing was also being used by more people – 15.5% of users, compared to 13.8% the week before.

“These initial data suggest that Microsoft Bing has generated early interest, resulting in a spike in search engagement and an immediate term improvement to Microsoft’s position in the search market,” said Mike Hurt, comScore senior vice president.

“It appears it is off to a good start.”

This month CIOZone is conducting a poll on search engines. We’re asking our users to tell us which search engine they think provides the most useful results. So far, Google is in a commanding lead with 63% of the vote compared to 10.5% for Bing and Yahoo.

I’ve experimented with Bing a number of times and it seems to produce comparable results to Google. I’d be tempted to try it more often, but I already have a handy Google search bar programmed into my Web browser, and when it comes to finding something quickly, I’m much more likely to take the easy route.

That may be the biggest hurdle in Bing’s battle against Google. In order to make Bing a search habit, Microsoft needs to win back that key piece of real estate on the browser. The release of Windows 7 this October may just be the opportunity it’s been looking for.

In the meantime, let us know which search engine provides you with the best results by taking our poll, located on the right hand side of the CIOZone home page.
