It appears that the ‘Softies have gotten the attention of the Googlers.

According to a report in the New York Post, Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing, is rattling a few cages in the corporate office of Google. Indeed, it appears that Google co-founder Sergey Brin is so unnerved by upstart Bing that he’s put together a team to quickly upgrade Google’s offering. Reportedly, Brin is personally overseeing that group—an unusual step.

It’s unclear when those improvements might start showing up.

Microsoft launched Bing two weeks ago with a massive marketing budget that sources claim ranges between $80 million and $100 million. And the search engine may be the best new product from Bill Gates, et. al since the xBox360 or Windows XP.

Bing has already boosted Microsoft’s share of search by about 2 percentage points, up to 11%. If it wins over even more converts, Bing could begin to seriously cut into Yahoo’s share of the market.  If so, that’s going to call into question Jerry Yang’s decision last year to thumb his nose at Microsoft’s bid for Yahoo.

Of course, consumers tend to stick with what they’re used to. Thus, Microsoft has a nearly impossible task in trying to knock Google off its perch. But at the very least, Bing has put Microsoft back in the picture.

Google would certainly be remiss to not take Bing seriously. We aren't talking about Wolfram Alpha here, but the massive resources of Microsoft. If anything, this sounds like a potential boon to end users. Competition is a main ingredient of innovation.
