April in Paris for global chip sales
Matt says he was taken somewhat aback by the negativity of my
most recent posts, so I’ll accentuate the positive in this one. Yes, indeed, this is clear evidence that April wasn’t nearly as cruel a month for technology
spending as it was expected to be. Take that, perma-bears!
Even so (sorry, Matt, just can’t help it), the full year forecast
for global PC unit sales is still a negative 6%. On the bright side, that would
be only half the decline forecast earlier. Similarly the updated forecast for
cell phone sales for the full year is negative 7%, but that would be less than half the 15%
decline expected earlier.
Good (great? terrific?) progress of a sort, I suppose, if you like to play
the expectations game. And for Matt’s sake, I’ll end this on the bright side, or
at least what passes for my bright side. (Full disclosure: One of my
wife’s many nicknames for me is Curmudge.)

If I could, I would personally increase IT spending across the entire economy just so you would have to write a truly positive article. However, I'm sure you'd include a line saying, "But questions remain over whether such short-term gains are sustainable."
But thanks for the effort.
