Alignment once again topped the list of key issues for IT managers, according to a just-completed survey from the Society for Information Management.

But, what, if anything, can chief information officers do to make sure IT and the business are better aligned?

Jerry Luftman, a distinguished professor at the Stevens Institute of Technology who oversees the SIM survey, says CIOs need to look at six areas:

1. Communications. Having effective communication between IT and business partner is where you have to start.

2. Governance. Having effective governance processes at the strategic, tactical and operational levels is critical.

3. Demonstrating business value. This is a must.

4. Partnering. You need to have a real relationship with the business units – and you need to make sure people are working to build relationships and make them strong.

5. Technology. Not just having the right infrastructure or architecture, but making sure that applications are effective.

6. Human resource. CIOs need to make sure they have the right people and that they’re motivated.

But, Luftman says, many organization concentrate on just a couple of these areas. To truly ensure IT-business alignment, he says, you need to succeed at all six.
