Cell phone vendors: Wake me when the real breakthrough comes
Share This -
It’s been a big few weeks for fans of mobile phones.
Palm unveiled its Pre, which, despite battery life that can be timed with a stopwatch , seems to be getting very positive reviews. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone 3G S, launched at its recent developers conference, has received favorable notices (other than the spotty AT&T network it runs on).
Despite all the hoopla, I still can’t help but feeling let down by these two portable phones. Maybe it’s all the rain we’ve been getting lately. Maybe it’s the Wheatina and percocet breakfast. Maybe it’s the whole Jessica Simpson comeback thing.
Whatever. The fact is, neither the latest iPhone or Palm are revolutionary devices: neither fundamentally alters the way we use wireless phones. They don’t even come close.
Revolutionary, you ask? Yes, revolutionary. Like the IBM Simon, or Qualcomm pdQ, or Treo, or first BlackBerry, or even the original iPHone. Those phones offered real breaks from what came before, and they dramatically altered how we use smartphones/PDAs.
As I’ve mentioned ad infinitum, if somebody could figure out how to make a smartphone that functions like a NetBook (a real keyboard and screen), or a NetBook that functions like a smartphone (small enough to fit in your pocket or hold up to your ear), then you’d have something.
Until then, I’m pushing the Snooze button. Wake me when something really good comes out.
