Featured Case Study: Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) formally unveiled their 'Ranger' Supercomputer
On February 22, 2008, Ranger, the most powerful supercomputing system in the world for open science research, was dedicated by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.
Five times more powerful than anything U.S. scientists have worked with in the past, Ranger was built by Sun Microsystems and is based on 15,744 Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors, with more than 500 teraflops peak computational performance (a teraflop is a measure of a computer's scientific calculation performance and can be expressed as one trillion floating point operations per second).
