From the comments: Gmail Outage Fuels Cloud Outrage

The transparency of Google in this case seems like it would mitigate the discomfort of not being the fire-fighter on the front lines that some IT professionals might feel in an outage like this. Their publicly available Application Dashboard made it very clear what the status was and clearly the issue was addressed quite effectively: http://www.google.com/appsstatus

I agree that the cloud must do even better than internally controlled systems. In my opinion this one is.

From the comments: The Pink Slip Could Hurt Less Than the Alternative

I agree with Fred about the insecurity that unemployed workers have to grapple with. I'm not discounting the results of the study, but I think a lot of it also depends on the individual and how well (or poorly) they're able to handle the stress associated with having their job at risk.

I don't know if you could draw a direct link between the two, but it might be worth doing a study that examines the health impact on remaining employees who are forced to do the work of X workers.

From the comments: You Too Can Be a CIO-Plus

In my opinion, it's a great time to be a CIO. As the article states, the perception barrier is changing and opening a whole new world of career opportunities for CIOs; while the implication is that this is oriented toward upward mobility in an established organization, few executives are better prepared than today's CIO to become entrepreneurs that can identify and take advantage of opportunities the information economy. There are also more solutions available to CIOs today than in any other time to flexibly and cost-effectively add value to an organization via SaaS, etc.

From the forums: Should a CIO Report to the CFO?

I agree, I have been CIO in several companies and it is best to report to the CEO, with some financial responsibilities to the CFO for budgets. The CEO and CIO are better suited to set strategic direction for the company and able to do so collaborate more effectively when the finance side of the equation does not squelch the conversations and planning. There is always plenty of time to consult with the CFO.
