As a long-time outsourcing industry hand, Certellus' Durant has some major concerns about the cloudsourcing model. For one thing, he notes, in working with an outsourcing vendor, the customer deals with an account manager and workers whom they know and who know their business requirements. "It usually takes up to three years to develop a strong relationship between the outsourcing people and the customer side," he says. With a cloudsourcer, which uses virtual and ever changing workforces to deal with clients, those relationships don't exist. This potentially represents a major detriment, Durant asserts.
Second, the first-tier outsourcers are proprietary about their customers, and are unlikely to share resources or work with other suppliers in providing collaborative services. "Unfortunately, the competitive nature of the outsourcing discipline does not easily foster the collaborative form of relationship," says Durant. "Companies would much rather go out of business than share control."
Durant also cites security concerns involving the cloud sourcing model, and projects that only the first-tier systems integrators and outsourcers will be able to incorporate cloud offerings successfully. "I think you'll see a lot of the third-tier suppliers disappear and second-tier vendors merge or else they won't last either."
