Compuware's move to scoop up Gomez, a Web optimization vendor, is in part aimed at the emerging cloud computing market, according to company officials.

In an interview with CIOZone, Compuware VP of strategy Mark Hillman and Gomez CTO Imad Mouline acknowledged that the initial result of the $295 million deal will be a joint product allowing clients to optimize performance of their applications behind the enterprise firewall and on the Internet. However, as the cloud computing opportunity develops, Compuware said the Gomez purchase will give it the tools it needs to offer companies a full-featured offering to monitor performance on the cloud.

"When you think about the radical shift that is underway, where IT organizations are going to start to acquire and provision infrastructure outside the enterprise … it's a remarkable shift in terms of the ability for IT to be able to see and monitor the quality of application execution and resolve problems," said Hillman.

In fact, the companies argue that one of the main concerns of chief information officers about porting their applications and data to the cloud is the lack of visibility, particularly from the end-user experience.

Gomez's Mouline noted that there is a lot of hype around cloud computing at the moment, but not a lot of rubber on the road. "CIOs are being cautious about taking their [applications and data] to the cloud," he said, primarily because they want to be able to ensure that cloud providers can deliver the same levels of service being offered by internally hosted applications. Cloud providers may promise to deliver the same level and quality of service, but Mouline said that CIOs want more than a promise -- they want proof and accountability.

"Once you decide on a cloud provider to host your application, you want to know whether you're going to have the right capacity in the cloud, whether it's working for all of your customers, no matter where they happen to be," he said. "That's where we can come in."

It may take some time for the cloud computing market to mature and get over the initial hype, but Hillman and Mouline said they believe the cloud will live up to its potential. Solutions like the combined Compuware and Gomez offerings "will change the landscape and enable it to expand," said Hillman.
