Drugstore chain Walgreens has overhauled its senior technology management team, hiring a new chief information officer and realigning its reporting structure.
Walgreens announced Thursday that it has tapped Tim Theriault, previously an executive with Chicago-based financial services firm Northern Trust, to serve as CIO. Theriault, 49, will be responsible for the Deerfield, Ill.-based company's information technology strategy.
Denise Wong had been CIO of Walgreens since May 2007 and divisional vice president since 2001. Wong will stay with the company but has been reassigned, filling the post of corporate vice president of information technologies and focusing on "elevating the company's in-store retail and corporate shared services IT systems," according to Walgreens.
In addition, Abhi Dhar, who headed IT in Walgreen's e-commerce division, has been promoted to the role of CTO and divisional vice president. He will be responsible for the end-to-end delivery, development and innovation of the company's online platform. Prior to joining Walgreens, Dhar was the CIO at TravelCLICK, a provider of e-commerce applications for hotels.
In announcing the changes, Walgreens chief executive Greg Wasson said the new management team will provide the foundation to enable the company to launch new businesses and strategic initiatives. That will include developing an enterprise architecture vision and building an infrastructure to support the company's business units and 7,000 drug stores around the country.
"Tim is a highly-respected technology and banking executive who brings a unique combination of leadership, innovation and business intellect," said Wasson. "His strategic business skills, reputation for building teams and financial background give Tim a combination of technology and business expertise that extends well beyond the IT space."
At Northern Trust, Theriault most recently served as president of corporate and institutional services. However, he brings with him an extensive background in technology, having served as president of worldwide technology and CTO for Northern Trust. He was a long-serving employee of Northern Trust, joining the company in 1982. Prior to that he worked in advanced technologies at S.C. Johnson and Son.
