Here’s a shocker: Young employees -- those 27 and under -- routinely bypass corporate approval procedures when using devices and applications.

The Millennial generation is one that has a sense of entitlement when it comes to technology, according to a recently released survey. For the study, Accenture surveyed nearly 6,000 Millennials – both young staffers and students -- seeking to understand how their technology-driven culture would impact IT organizations.

Forty-five percent of the Millennials polled worldwide said they use social networking sites at work whether prohibited or not. Two-thirds of respondents don’t abide by anti-social networking policies if they’re in place, although only 34 percent whether such policies exist.

Respondents generally:

  • Prefer to choose the computer, mobile device and applications they use at work.
  • Express disappointment with the quality of employer-provided emerging technologies.
  • Favor text messaging or instant messaging over e-mail.
  • Routinely bypass corporate approval procedures when using devices and applications.
  • Regularly download nonstandard technologies not available at work.
  • Exhibit different notions of online privacy than older worker.

All this, Accenture says, leaves organizations with a choice: try to mold the generation or work to integrate its strengths into the organization. Integration will require that enterprises rethink their IT policies and organizational structures.

Organizations that fail to embrace the Millennials’ behavior risk being unable to attract and retain new hires, as well as missing out on the innovation in IT they may provide, says the research firm.

And if you think their attitudes toward technology are different than other generations, wait until you see their expectations about advancement or what they expect from managers (try constant affirmation, just like they receive from their parents).
