Hospira, a provider of generic injectable drugs and medication delivery devices, has named Johnson & Johnson executive Daphne Jones as senior vice president and CIO, effective Nov. 9.

Current CIO Mike Carlin is leaving the Lake Forest, Ill.-based company to pursue other opportunities, according to a Hospira spokesperson, but he will be working with Jones in the near term to ease the transition. A former IT executive at health care company Abbott Laboratories, Carlin has headed IT at Hospira since Abbott spun it off in 2004.

Jones, 52, joined Johnson & Johnson in 1997, and was most recently worldwide vice president of IT for the company and CIO of its Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics subsidiary. In the position, Jones executed global IT strategies across multiple Johnson & Johnson business units and led the company's recent sector-wide IT transformation. Jones, who has held director and executive director titles at multiple Johnson & Johnson businesses during her tenure there, has also driven implementation of regional SAP solutions in Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the U.S.

According to Hospira, Jones will have responsibility for the company's IT systems and will be a member of its senior leadership team. Among her initial projects will be a transition to a cross-company global SAP environment and the consolidation of disparate platforms onto a common infrastructure.

Jones will report to CEO and chairman Chris Begley, who in a statement called her "a proven leader whose deep knowledge of the healthcare industry, strong technical expertise and passion for connecting our company through IT solutions will help drive the global transition to SAP as well as improve our technology capability and support throughout Hospira."

Before joining Johnson & Johnson, Jones was director of IT at Public Service Electric & Gas in Newark, N.J. and has also logged 14 years at IBM. She holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and master's of business management from Illinois State University.

Hospira saw its revenues increased 6.1 percent last quarter, to $957 million compared to $902 million in the same period in 2008.
