Google Search for CIO Lands Ben Fried

Google's search for a new chief information officer has led it to investment bank Morgan Stanley, where the search giant has hired away Ben Fried as its new technology chief.

Google's search for a new CIO began in early April when former CIO Douglas Merrill announced he was resigning to take on a new role as president of EMI Music's digital music business. At Morgan Stanley, Fried ran the company's application infrastructure group, responsible for all software and electronic commerce development.

While Fried comes from a much different industry than Google, he has an extensive background working with Internet-based technologies. According to his Columbia University personal blog, Fried joined Morgan Stanley in 1994. He says his group was responsible for all Web and portal technologies and hosting, including "internet-facing infrastructure, document management, search, business intelligence, email, instant messaging, video conferencing, and computer-telephony integration."

Fried will feel the spotlight at Google. His predecessor was somewhat of a celebrity not only for his role at the tech giant but also for his personality. With his tattoos and tall, athletic frame, Men's Health sized up surfer Merrill as "6'4", 183 pounds, 7% body fat."

But Fried isn't without his own interesting traits. One tidbit from his profile: Fried is a partner in Fra' Mani Handcrafted Salumi (yes, that's salumi, not salami), a Berkeley, Calif.-based maker of traditional Italian sausages.

Weyerhaeuser Names Shearer CIO

Forestry giant Weyerhaeuser has named Kevin Shearer, 52, as its vice president of information technology and CIO effective May 1. He succeeds Susan Mersereau, 61, who is retiring.

Shearer joined the Federal Way, Wash., company in 1980 and has held a number of IT related positions, rising to the position of vice president of IT business operations in 2007. He was credited for his work in leading the IT integration of Weyerhaeuser's acquisitions of Cavenham, MacMillan Bloedel, Willamette and Trus-Joist.

CSC Hires Security Chief

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) announced that it has hired Patrick Schambach as its vice president and general manager of its enforcement, security and intelligence division. Schambach will be responsible for the company's Department of Homeland Security business, managing all related development and service delivery.

Schambach joins CSC from Nortel Government Solutions where he spent four years as president of its civilian e-government initiatives. Prior to that, he worked for the U.S. government for 32 years, including as CIO of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
