CIOs are getting ready to go ahead with IT projects they put on hold in 2009 due to economic conditions, according to a new survey from staffing firm Robert Half Technology.
Thirty-seven percent of the CIOs named software and hardware upgrades as a deferred project they plan to implement after the recession. “Software and hardware upgrades are necessary to support the evolving technology needs of organizations,” said Dave Willmer, executive director of Robert Half Technology, in a statement. “Businesses recognize that delaying system upgrades and other investments for too long could prevent them from taking advantage of emerging technologies that provide a competitive advantage.”
Sixteen percent of the respondents named virtualization as an initiative they plan to proceed with, while another 16 percent pointed to Web site design projects. The other leading answers were internal collaboration technology tools (12 percent), cloud computing (11 percent) and company-based social media sites (9 percent)
More than 1,400 CIOs from U.S. companies with more than 100 employees participated in the survey, which was developed by Robert Half and conducted by an unnamed independent research firm.
The staffing firm says that CIOs’ plans to move forward with new IT initiatives is good news for prospective employees. “As they initiate previously deferred projects, many companies will need to hire additional employees, on either a full-time or project basis, to install new systems, staff the help desk, provide network support or handle information security," said Willmer.
