In the month of May, CIOZone asked its members to select which of the 10 largest technology companies was in the best position to pick up market share in a tough economy. The poll received a total of 113 votes, and IBM narrowly beat out Oracle for the top spot, with 23% of the vote, compared with 21.2% for Oracle.

It was an interesting result given that the two tech giants vied to take over Sun Microsystems in April. IBM eventually decided to pull out of the bidding, and Oracle swooped in to purchase its Silicon Valley neighbor for about $7.4 billion.

Finishing third on the list was Google with 15% of the vote, Apple was fourth with 9.7%, and Cisco and Microsoft tied for fifth with 8.8%.

The companies vying in the poll were chosen from the annual CIOZone 100—our annual ranking of the biggest and best technology companies.

CIOZone is conducting a new poll in June on search engines. Rather than ask members which search engine they use the most—which would almost certainly result in a win for Google—we're asking which search engine provides the best results.

Microsoft has launched a revamped version of its search engine, dubbed Bing, and we're curious to know how it stacks up to the competition. Check it out, and cast your vote.
