At the Sapphire conference in Orlando this week, SAP unveiled a new business intelligence offering, SAP Business Objects Explorer.
The software is meant to simplify the process of conducting complex analytical queries into corporate information sources, by allowing users to ask questions with a Google-like search tool.
An insurance company employee might, for example, ask a question such as "How many people died of head-related injuries in motor vehicle crashes?" and the software would reach out into the company's various databases and retrieve the information.
Brewing giant Molson Coors was one of a handful of companies chosen to test drive the software before its general release this summer. Katrina Coyle, Molson Coors global information manager, shares the initial findings.
"Any company today is challenged with having more data than it can possibly know what to with," says Coyle. Combing through those reams of data can often take days or weeks, delaying the decision-making process. "With this tool I can put it on the screen in a meeting, and have an answer before walking out of the room."

OK, we seem to be headed in the right direction. But are we really at the stage though where we can ask a question as simple as "tell me how to make my company more profitable." and get a viable response? think not. That's when we've reached the BI holy grail.
