Another sign that virtualization software is taking root in a wider range of corporations comes from career Web site Dice.com.
In its latest marketplace trends report, Dice senior vice president Tom Silver, says technologists who are trained in particular in VMWare’s products will find they are in high demand.
“There are more than 1,500 jobs posted on Dice that require VMWare experience, up 40% from only six months ago,” Silver said in the May Dice Report.
Research firm IDC forecasts the worldwide market for virtualization software will grow to $3.5 billion by 2011, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.1% from 2006. VMWare has been a the forefront of this sector, but other companies are looking to take advantage of the trend, most notably Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Red Hat, and Citrix Systems. Microsoft is also expected to launch its own virtualization product, dubbed Hyper-V, this fall.
“Right now only a handful of jobs call for Hyper-V knowledge, but we’ll be watching to see if demand for this skill grows once the product is released,” Silver said.
In a separate poll, Dice asked its users the degree to which their organizations had adopted virtualization. The poll found 40% of respondents had virtualized a “significant number of servers and services” while another 10% reported they had plans to do so in the next 12 months.
