Customs Agent Steals Laptop
Written by Storagepipe Solutions

By now, it should really be no surprise to anyone reading this that airports are THE prime location for laptop theft. That's why it's so important that you never leave your luggage unattended or turn your back on it for even a second.

But even with the strictest of precautions, there will always be some variables that you can't control. At some point, you're going to have to hand your laptop over to someone who's in a trusted position of authority. And as we've seen time and time again, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Take the recent case from Philadelphia, where a customs supervisor was caught using his position to steal laptops from airline passengers. You can read more about this case from PilotOnline.

As with many criminal cases involving authority figures, the man in this incident reportedly won't face any jail time despite his conviction and the way in which he abused his privilege. This ensures that similar incidents will surely happen again in the future.

Of course, losing a laptop is not that big a deal. You can replace a good machine at any Best Buy for about $1000. The real damage from laptop theft is caused by the loss of critical data that might have been stored on the machine.

An incident like this might only net a few hundred dollars for the criminal, but it can be a financially devastating event for the victim. A single critical data loss incident like this is enough to destroy a company, and cause irreparable damage to the victim.

In order to prepare for the worst, it's important that you take decisive action in order to protect your business from harm.

By taking proactive measures and backing up critical data files using a fully-automated online backup system, at least you’ll be able to get your life back and move on in the event that something like this ever happens to you.

If you ever have a laptop stolen, having a plan in place will make sure it's only a minor inconvenience, and not a full-blown crisis.
