As previously mentioned the CIOZone.com platform is comprised of 100% Open Source Components. Several new enhancements have been made to our implementation of the Joomla CMS along with LAMP stack on which it runs. The first is the installation of a PHP accelerator known as APC. This open source program is an op
code cache for PHP script execution. APC eliminates the CPU overhead of continuous PHP parsing of repeated executions of code threads.
CIOZone.com advertising partners ( currently IBM, SUN, RIM to name a few) are now able to serve display and rich media advertising across many sections ( and zones ) of the CIOZone.com website. Ad units currently delivered include Leader Board, Footer, IMU, and Welcome ad units. This is accomplished with the
installation of a separate ad server running the open source application known as OpenAds. This Ad Serving platform is capable of serving millions of ad units to millions of page views across multiple websites on a daily basis. This
OpenAds open source platform is also based on Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP.
Lastly we have completed the testing and migration of several of our servers to the Fedora Core 7 Linux distribution and release. Testing will begin shortly on Fedora Core 8, the newest version of this Linux
variant. The Fedora Core program seeks to provide an operating system update every 6 - 8 months. By staying current with operating system releases you can help to ensure your site operates within the most secure environment possible by leveraging the hard work of the open source community to fix known security issues as they arise. This strategy helps to minimize any data loss and system down time.
Next I will be writing about CIOZone.com open source scalability and capacity planning with respect to and the challenges of a 2 tier architecture.
