Cyber Monday Deals to Battle Tough Holiday Season

This Christmas shopping season will likely be one of the toughest on record for retailers as consumers tighten their belts in the wake of the economic downturn.


As a result retailers are expected to battle more than ever before on the Internet for shoppers by offering a wide range of online-only promotions and deals.


According to a study released this week by Shop.org, a division of the National Retail Federation, 83.7% of retailers are expected to post a special promotion for Cyber Monday, the Monday after the Thanksgiving weekend, up from 72.2% a year ago. Cyber Monday is the ceremonial kickoff to the online holiday shopping season in much the same way Black Friday kicks off the brick and mortar Christmas shopping frenzy.


“As shoppers focus on price this holiday season, online retailers will be extremely competitive to offer the very best deals,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org.


The most popular promotions are expected to be specific deals (38.8%), email campaigns (32.7%), and one-day sales (24.5%). In addition, close to one-quarter of retailers say they will be offering free shipping on purchases.


Shop.org coined the term Cyber Monday in 2005, after retailers began to notice a trend of people shopping online on the Monday after Thanksgiving.


Employers who see their staff pointing and clicking away extra furiously that day, might not be noticing a corresponding increase in productivity.


It is expected that more than half of shoppers, or 55.8%, will be doing their shopping online at the office. That represents some 73 million people, according to Shop.org.


Of course, I’m sure most of those people will be shopping during their lunch hours.
