Can Cloud Computing Save Your IT Budget
Written by Peter Rothman
Cloud computing is far more advanced than many people realize. Google is leading the charge offering free or low cost apps that compete with the Microsoft Applications we run on our desktops and servers, without the need for complex server infrastructures. Gmail can support the most organizations with ease and with the introduction of their e-discovery tools can ensure companies meet their legal retention requirements. Google Docs offer a easy and seamless way for companies to collaborate and share information. Almost daily Google offers new functionalty but they are not the only player in this market space. Amazon offers cloud based storage and backup solutions and others will be following this business model very soon. I am not saying drop all your Microsoft licenses immediately, however, if you are considering upgrading to Office 2007 which will require retraining your employees you might want to consider Open Office for the desktop and leverage Google's platform for document sharing and communications. Utilizing these cloud based services will lighten the load on your infrastrucure resources and if you are concerned about your energy usage will make you more "Green".

I agree with your post above and would like to add that if large enterprises in industries such as finance, auto, etc adopt this strategy they should see real cost savings especially in today's economic environment. Transitioning IT services to a cloud computing environment will help reduce costs and help the environment by reducing the overall IT-Eco footprint.

Free and low cost cloud computing is a moment in history akin to Gutenberg's press in the effects that it will have on society and business.
