As mentioned in a
previous blog, business travelers lose more than 12,000 laptops a week in American airports, according to a new report by the Ponemon Institute, which offers education, research and verification programs around information and privacy management.
So, what can today’s road warriors do to minimize the risk of losing a laptop at an airport?
Ponemon offers some suggestions. Here’s five:
- Put a label on your laptop. “Provide your full contact information so that if the device is found, airport personnel will be able to reach you or your company quickly,” says Ponemon.
- Give yourself enough time. Many laptops are lost as business travelers rush through security checkpoints. “Stupid mistakes can be avoided if you slow down your pace,” Ponemon advises.
- Think. “Have a mental strategy when removing laptops and other possessions prior to screening at a security checkpoint,” Ponemon says, which reduces your chances of misplacing your laptop.
- Protect the information in your computer. Encrypt files and create backups for starters.
- Review the information you carry around on your laptop. “Is it really necessary to have so much information accessible on your computer?” Ponemon asks.
